I''ve been an Elton John fan since he first became a star. I have most of his music but not all and I admit that there are some Elton John albums I like way more than others. This is one of those albums. What I like is that this album really has a bite to it. It truly rocks. It is distinctly different from his ballad albums. Guitar is more prominent on this album and Elton John''s voice really has a bite. You still have a ballad on here: "I Feel Like A Bullet" and in this setting it really stands out. Don''t get me wrong, I love Elton John Ballads. And though this is a rocking album it certainly isn''t wailing guitar, but just jamming, in Elton''s own way. It''s distinct style outside Elton''s box warrants it a place in your Elton John collection.

"Island Girl" was a big hit, but there is also "Grow Some Funk of your Own" and "I Feel Like a Bullet". I personally like "Street Kids" which was utilized in Grand Theft Auto IV video game in 2008! This album didn''t have Dee Murray and Nigel Olsson as they were dismissed in April of 1975. Daley Johnstone, Caleb Quaye, and Ray Cooper are as terrific as ever! This CD is highly recommended!

The Weakest Of Elton''s Early 1970s'' Albums, But A Good Buy Nonetheless

Following in the wake of the commercial and artistic success of "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy", it didn''t come as a shock that many fans (and especially critics) were underwhelmed by "Rock Of The Westies". And frankly, their disappointment is justified: out of all the albums Elton made between 1970 to 1975, "Rock Of The Westies" is easily the weakest creatively. However, that doesn''t mean the album is exactly bad. In fact, it is quite good. Most people will remember it for "Island Girl" (a lightweight but fun number one hit) and maybe "Grow Some Funk Of Your Own" (a song that briefly showed its face in the Top 20, reaching # 14), both of which are great songs. But this album is, like all other Elton John albums, loaded with some hiddeng gems. "I Feel Like A Bullet In The Gun Of Robert Ford" is one of Elton''s greatest ballads ever. This song should have been released as its own single rather than be released as a double A - side "Grow Some Funk...". "Feed Me" is a harrowing tale of a junkie that featres a powerful Elton vocal and some wonderful electric piano work. "Street Kids", "Hard Luck Story" and "Billy Bones And The White Bird" represent a more rocking side of Elton and are very good songs overall. Of course, there is some lightweight fare like the bombastic opening "Medley" and "Dan Dare (Pilot Of The Future)", but overall the album holds up pretty well. The addition of the excellent bonus tracks "Planes" (a pensive acoustic ballad and one of my favorite Elton songs ever) and "Sugar On The Floor" add an extra kick to the album. Recommended.

A good album. The last album of what I would call Elton''s golden age (1970 - 1975). Several outstanding songs, especially "I Feel Like A Bullet". This album didn''t interest me much when it came out in 1975 because it came out on the heels of Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy and didn''t have the wow factor like its predecessor. However, almost 40 years later, I''ve found that it was/is a very good album and deserves some long overdue credit. If you like Elton John, particularly 1970''s vintage Elton John, I think you will very much like most of this album. Definitely worth the price.
